Congrats to Conner McGraw- TOP 12 in the State!
We had an exciting two days at the regional tournament! With a depleted lineup of just nine wrestlers, we still had three regional placers and a state tournament qualifier. At 106, Preston Cates joined his two freshman counterparts, Jackson Martin 113, and Cliff Lester 126, in being the largest number of freshman entrants in recent Fairview history to start on varsity and wrestle in the regional. Those three were followed by sophomore Cito Balsells, our JV wrestler at 182 behind Kevin Lohndorf, who after the cancellation of JV state, decided to go up a weight class and wrestle at 197 pounds. Cito was 7 seconds away from being a regional placer but gave up a last second takedown! Our junior contingent was Josh Weinstein who stepped up and had a great day finishing 5th. He lost a chance at state in the wrestle-back against a tough Mountain Range foe but he will represent Fairview next season as our lone returning regional placer.

Our seniors represented our program well starting with Cody Kennedy, our 145 wrestler, who started the year on varsity but was beaten out for the spot in January when Ben Bulow became healthy. Unfortunately Ben was injured in the last dual meet of the season so Cody stepped back in a wrestled tough against both his regional opponents. He put the #3 seeded wrestler on his back a couple times but wasn't able to close the deal. First year wrestler, Spencer Renteria looked like a seasoned veteran when he dominated the first of his three opponents at the regional. An amazing story for a guy who came out in November and also helped secure our 5th consecutive win against Boulder High.

Team captain, and 19th ranked, Kevin Lohndorf, made the semi-finals but lost to a strong Ponderosa wrestler. In the consolation side, the road became more difficult when to get into the consolation finals, Kevin had to face a higher ranked Legacy opponent who had beaten him badly him two weeks earlier. Kevin lead off and on most of the match and then with two lead changes in the final minute, lost in a heart breaker. He won the bout for 5th place but did not earn a chance to compete for the state qualifier spot. A great day for Kevin and some of his best wrestling of the season.

Finally, at heavyweight, Conner McGraw, punched his ticket to state by beating a 4th seeded and savvy, semi-final opponent from Aurora Central. Conner lost in the finals to the #1 ranked wrestler from Mountain Range and it looked like we were going to catch him and put him on his back early in the bout when Conner stopped his headlock attempt. Conner will represent Fairview this year at the state tournament and I could not be happier for him. Conner, only in his third year wrestling, is ranked 8th and is going to state for the first time. The last time we had a heavyweight qualifier was in 2005 when Jerrett Metoyer made his second appearance. Congratulations and best of luck Conner!
